It can open up new ways to experience a game through mechanics or just be a little easier to get through with a friend or two as you face scares together. How a story plays out, how the player interacts with the world and what is shown versus hidden all create a terrifying narrative to have fun with and adding co-op can expand on that. Horror games are all about the experience. Even the Resident Evil series has one entry that can be enjoyed in co-op, even though it leans more towards action-horror than the pure terror kind. It encourages playing together and even incorporates microphones and headsets into its mechanics. Phasmophobia is a hit, and while it can be played alone, it's incredibly difficult to do so and not because it's scary. It just has to be done right.Ī few games have shown it's entirely possible already. It may seem strange to some, playing them alone is definitely tenser, but a game can still be spooky and enjoyed with others. There is one core concept that has only just begun to change though, and that's being able to enjoy these games with others rather than alone in the dark.
It's a much bigger genre than it used to be, with at least a few new games coming out every year. Horror games have come a long way in terms of how they're executed and just how terrifying some of their concepts are.
